Saturday at the fish market

Last weekend my husband didn't have to stand duty, so we were excited to spend the weekend together as a family. We considered a big adventure like spending the weekend in Portugal, or a day trip to Gibraltar, but the whole weekend promised to be cold and rainy--not exactly ideal for walking tours. So instead we went to the fish market right here in Rota, and picked up some fresh fish to smoke for our dinner. The fish market experience can be a little intimidating. We looked up some Spanish recipes ahead of time so I would know what kind of fish to look for and what the Spanish translations are. So I intended to look for "bacalao," which is salt cod and can be cooked in a variety of ways. Instead, we saw some gorgeous large "barado." Turns out Barado is tuna! We got 3 good sized fish for 11 Euros.

The fish market is right by the lighthouse at Rota's Point. With a storm rolling in, the waves were high and splashing up on the rocks. We walked all the way out to the edge of the point to watch them crash. Alex loved the wind, and the older kids loved watching the waves...

which was fun until a huge wave came up and broke right on them! I was standing a few feet behind them and just got sprayed on 1 side. Danny thought it was the best thing ever! So it was a very fun Saturday morning, and then we got to spend the afternoon being dry and cozy, and waiting for our fresh tuna to smoke. It was delicious! Que rico!
